I discovered my love for teaching while pursuing my undergraduate degree in English at The College of Brockport, State University of New York. I earned a dual teaching certification in English Language Arts 6-12 and Special Education K-12.
I was quickly discouraged by the overwhelming difficulty my students experience with reading and writing. I never realized that I would be teaching students who would be reading at the most basic levels while still being expected to follow the common core curriculum, and I was disheartened by their reluctance to keep trying to learn after years of struggle and failure.

I knew I had to do something to help, so I took every possible training my first year of teaching, but it still wasn't enough. When I learned about the New Literacies and Global Learning program at NC State and the first master's cohort in K-12 reading, I felt compelled to join and become the literacy specialist my students need to help them succeed.
